What does the effect of popular music and culture have on the Art & Design produced during its time?

Art is very representative of its time of creation. Music has always been an influence on the style of art, such as Debussy. With his style of music at large, art seemed to reflect its style and this theme has followed on even to now. For centuries this theme has carried through and it is still visible today. From the start of Da Vinci’s time, where popular music was very classical, using soft tones and strings to now, where music has become very grimy and as an example I would say music much like Nero or Magnetic man has had an effect on what is now be mainstream, such as work by Theo Aartsma or even a loose relation to Banksy. Although through time there have other artists who have not followed mainstream artists such as Stephano Buffoni, there are only a few of these artists. There has always been a strong link between these two, along with other popular culture issues such as clothing, technology and political issues, which can been shown with work done by Rodchenko during the Russian revolution, where his work was inspired by the popular political and international issues, shown by many of his posters produced during 1925 and so on.  Other artists such as Arthur Szyk also create their work based on political issues which also holds a link to bands such as Radio Head which is very anti establishment and their music fully reflects that. Product designers are also connected to popular culture as their main objective is to appeal to their audience and so they must continually keep their designs up to date to reach the possible potential they possess. Artists such as Edwin Tofslie who will continually seek to keep their work appealing, however sometimes they will try to push the boundary which can prove to be risky, which in the world of product life cycles may make or break the business.

In the early years of music and art, people such as Leandro Da Vinci became famous from their artistic displays to show beauty for all to see, in a very traditional way, much like the music of the time, however in more modern times the idea of contemporary art has many people confused as to what they are seeing and fail to recognise the beauty and symbolism that the artist is trying to display. Artists are growing in a world where expression can be shown with a single line on a canvas, a bag with nothing but a receipt inside of it and to many traditionalists this is not art but over time the meaning of art has changed from distinct beauty and artistic capability to capture the mood of a day, a week a month or so on to something that comes from a single persons imagination and how they wish to express it in what may be confusing and pointless to some but to others it truly speaks to. However between both sides there has a means of which they have both combined. From the past where art was something that couple be placed on a wall and to all those who see it can understand the artists view to more modern times where art can only be seen by others who hold a similar view. The style of art that can be displayed between both is graffiti which is a much more urban feel to art. The perspectives of which there are links between to the two are that when graffiti is displayed, it causes controversy which has always been an issue within art, music and culture but the typography and style of the work in question can always be appreciated. The complexities of the designs are very difficult to duplicate from one artist to another as each has their own style. Artists such as Paulo Gabriel have reached the middle between traditional and contemporary art. His work ranges from different styles but has become known for his work with light art and how he incorporates light with true images to create a simple but effect piece of artwork.  His piece entitled ‘I am here’ is a representation of that. It shows a mixture of simplicity of complicated design to create a piece that many would assume was a computer generated image but was actually created using photography. With a relation to music and culture this fits in well with the style of music that has vastly becoming popular within social circles.

This piece could only truly be appreciated in today’s society as it has more of relation to the younger generation of night life, bright lights and urban music. This is where the influence of musical artists such as Lil Wayne, Nero and Eminem is displayed, as without what them and their musical output which often leads the way for controversial movements; pieces of work like this may not have come about. Although this is not a controversial piece, the aspects of this art piece show true identity to the time it was made, using new techniques to create a simple design and also plays on the idea of graffiti.

This second piece does not stray far from the first, both using a urban feel to the work, but the second is also displaying a global theme of pollution, and although in music this is not discussed of at all, in modern culture it is becoming more and more of a global issue to try and cut down pollution. This art piece is using modern techniques to display and issue that has been around for decades and now we see the consequences. This issue is becoming and major factor so to create an art piece that follows with that theme, not only does it show awareness, but also could be used as a marketing and advertising idea to try and make the message more known. This artist is showing that popular music and culture does influence the art that is produced, from the message it is trying to express to the methods and techniques he uses to express it.

Edwin Tofslie is another artist/designer who has followed music and culture but his reasoning is more commercial. He is a designer who has created many things for Nike and other well known brands and websites. He needs to follow trends in fashion, sports, music and culture to create work that would not only sell his designs to companies but then sell their products to the public.

This piece of artwork has a very modern feel to it with the choice of tone and colour which year ago would not have been accepted because it would have seemed too expressive. He used a grimy feeling to his work because that has become a theme for the time this was created and although the text is not exciting it still keeps with the proportions set by the back canvas. The lone man running is also key to modern culture as now sport instead of being a friendly thing to do, has become a competition no matter the age or event so the idea of doing it alone is also in keeping with modern society.

However there is also the technological side of art that is reaching a new age in designing. More and more designers are now emerging as they are able to express themselves in a way that they feel comfortable because not all designers can also draw but using technology they do not need to have that ability. In this piece he is able to use technology to create a piece that is pleasing to eye but also covers the basics needed to create a successful webpage. He uses very complex designs such as multi layering and composition styles to make the work seem much more complex thus creating the viewers to think that this product is high end quality and with the Nike logo placed in a very unobvious place, it gives the design the final piece to reliability that the product on sale is a worthwhile piece which in modern society is key because now issues on quality are being raised so people are asking more and more questions as to if products are putting out the quality they try to advertise.

Popular music and culture will always have a heavy influence on art. Music is often the product of environment so wherever you live, the music from that area will try to capture that place. And with society influencing music it also influences inspiration. Artists find inspiration in different ways, some look at past creations and try to modernise them, some try to use their surroundings and possessions to create a piece they feel best represents them, but others use music to try and be inspired, and through all these artists it is still society dictating their actions. When one person makes a radical movement, it is because of their interpretation of what is going on around them so while others try to maintain a status quo, there are those who disrupt it, which causes a change in the way we live and the art that is being created. Modern times has created pieces of art that 10 to 20 years ago would not have been thought of, and the same can be said for past generations and this is because of the way we live our lives and the things we feel comfortable in. Techniques are changing also, more people using technology to create art, lights to create eye pleasing pieces and different textures that in the past people would not have thought of using. With these changes art is influenced and that is shown in every aspect of our lives, from simple expressions to fashion to advertising, the culture we live in will always influence the art and designs we create.

Richard Long

His work is based on walking outdoors in nature, often in very remote locations. He displays his walk in many different forms,  and his artwork reflects the journey he had taken, as the making of his work and the end product are very valuable to him.

All of these images and videos all have had an influence on my ideas and thought processes. In all of these images they show the underlying issue of chasing a dream or working for a greater goal. some show what they need to do some show what is holding them back, but they all show aspiration.
